5 Challenges in Education in Today's Society
Education is a basic human right. However,
children across the major part of the globe are facing several barriers to
accessing quality education. In some instances, there is no school, while in
other cases the teachers are not trained well enough to impart quality
education. Increasing access to
education can do a lot of good for the entire planet. It can improve the
overall health and longevity of the society, make people more equipped to
combat climate change and lead to overall peace and prosperity.
Here are 5 of the greatest challenges in
education in today’s society that the world needs to address on urgent basis to
achieve the objective of quality education for all by 2030.
Lack
of adequate finance
It is simply not feasible to expect
developing countries to take care of their own education system with the
limited financial resources they have at their command. They can only achieve
to educate their citizens if they receive adequate foreign aid from developed
countries. According to the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) only 20% of
aid for education goes to low-income countries.
Lack
of teachers or teachers who are poorly trained
Teacher effectiveness greatly influences a
child’s learning. The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) reports that there
are simply not sufficient number of teachers to achieve universal primary or
secondary education. Also, majority of the teachers in schools in developing
countries lack the knowledge and the expertise to offer anything substantial to
their students by way of teaching. As a result, students do not receive the
type of education that can enable them to make a difference. There are 130
million children in school who lack proper training to learn basic skills like
reading, writing and math.
Absence
of classrooms
Lack of classrooms do not allow students to
lean in an environment conducive to learning. Children in many countries in
sub-Saharan Africa either learn in the open or are squeezed into overcrowded
classrooms that lack basic amenities.
Lack
of learning materials
Outdated and worn-out textbooks curtail
learning in many parts of the world. Workbooks, exercise sheets, readers, and
other core materials are in very short supply which hampers a student’s ability
to learn and practice.
Exclusion
of differently-abled children
